From the President
As we begin our stewardship campaign, “Taking Care of the Church We Love,” I want to share my story and my experience here at TJMC. When I first began attending this church six years ago, and the issue of “canvass” came up, I have to admit I had a really hard time. I was not brought up to talk about money. We just did not do that at home. And I was also feeling at a loss, literally, because a recent change in jobs came with a significant cut in salary. The first year or so here, I was struggling with whether or not I could afford to be part of a church.
It is because of the church community I found here that I was able to deal with the tragic death of a colleague. And it was everything about the church, a place that was safe to be, people whom I trusted and who were so very generous with their support and warmth (and lots of hugs), and the kind and generous ear of a minister. I did not have this level of support prior to coming to TJMC.
The UUppity Women were critical to my well being after my dad became ill in 2006 and up until his death last May. The support I received from my friends in this group was invaluable. These remarkable women listened a lot, and helped me laugh when things were rough. I do hope they all know how important they are to me.
The opportunity to work with others on Marriage Rights issues, canvassing, discussing, and even marching in Washington was (and is) a gift. Not only did I learn a lot, I cherish the friends I made and the friendships that were deepened in the process.
At this point in my life, I do not know how I could afford not to belong to this community. What I have learned over the past few years is that as my life priorities changed, it was easier to change the priorities in my personal budget. I have also learned that money is not everything. I have chosen to volunteer and support the church with my time as well, currently with my work on the board. Believe me, donating your time and talents is just as important as donating your treasure!
During the stewardship campaign you will have the opportunity to talk to others about your TJMC stories. I encourage you to take a look at how TJMC has taken care of you, and think about how you want to give back and take care of the church we all love.
In peace,
Donna Baker
