We welcome our new Interim Minister, Rev. Dr. Janet Newman! Dr. Newman is that unusual minister who actually prefers interim appointments to settled ministry, and has served as interim minister to nineteen different congregations since 1987. She graduated from Smith College, and worked as a computer programmer/analyst in northern VA for ten years. She was active in the UU church in Arlington, VA. She followed a call to the ministry after her husband’s unfortunate death in an automobile accident. She is currently serving as interim minister at the First UU Church of Austin TX, a congregation of over 700. |

TJMC UUsed BookStore: Our UUsed BookStore is open for business each Sunday in the Social Hall during coffee hour. The stock is rotated frequently, so stop by each week and check out what is new. The selection includes fiction, non-fiction, spirituality, reference and children’s books, all at prices so low you can buy a book, read it, and donate it back for someone else to enjoy. Donations are welcome. Please leave them in the Summit House kitchen alcove or on the front porch if the building is locked.

June 20, Sunday: Social Action Collection - Public Housing Association of Residents The mission of the Public Housing Association of Residents is to empower Charlottesville’s low income residents to protect and improve our own communities through collective action. In the coming year PHAR will: 1. Strengthen public housing resident involvement in the redevelopment planning process and in other issues related to quality of life among residents, including site-based organizing, and, 2. Develop knowledge and civic participation among a new class of PHAR Interns.
June 20, Sunday: Greg Greenway Concert, 7 PM, Sanctuary Come sample Greg’s music at Rev. Dr. Morris Hudgins last service at TJMC and then come back for a full concert. A reception will follow in the Social Hall. Greg is a soulful and moving singer, a powerful poet, and a sparkling entertainer. Originally from Richmond, he moved to Boston for its rich Folk Music tradition and has become one of its most unique and superlative emissaries. Drawing inspiration from gospel, rock, blues, jazz, and world music, Greg continues the singer/songwriter tradition that traces its roots back to the social awareness of Woody Guthrie. Greg’s central appeal comes through the singular lens of his humanity and his easy affinity for his audience.

May 22, Saturday: Twenty Sixth Annual Charlottesville Women’s Choir Spring Concert, 7:30 PM, The Haven. You are cordially invited to attend a Spring Concert at the Haven, in the former church building at First and Market Streets in Charlottesville. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Haven, a resource for the hungry, disadvantaged, and homeless. In gratitude to TJMC members for allowing us rehearsal space, twenty UUs may sign up for (free) special admission to the concert by contacting Karen Sherwood at 923-0521 or sherwood@embarqmail.com.
June 12-13: Witness Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining up Close and Personal Register now to attend an overnight trip to Kayford Mountain, West Virginia, about 200 miles west of Charlottesville, to visit the home of Larry Gibson, founder of Keeper of the Mountains Foundation. Gibson’s home is surrounded by 1200 acres of flattened mountains, but he has courageously fought to live there and protect it. We plan to depart on Saturday, June 12, either by van or car pool, tour the site, and then drive on to Charleston where we will share a potluck picnic supper with UUs from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Charleston in the nearby State Forest, which is threatened by natural gas and coal mining. We will stay overnight and join Sunday services with our fellow UUs, then return home. Costs for van transportation (limit 12) will be about $40 each, and hotel lodging with breakfast can vary from $80 to $120/double. The group is limited to twenty adults. Staying with UU hosts in Charleston is also a possibility for a few. To register for the trip, stop at our Green Table or email Sharon Baiocco, green@uucharlottesville.org.
Host Families Needed: Rich Olin is looking for families to welcome a French or Spanish teenager into their home for four weeks this summer. The kids speak English - well enough to get by - are fully insured for medical and liability and have spending money. This is a rewarding experience that is fun and educational for both your family and the student. The dates are: French: June 12 through July 10; June 26 through July 24; Spanish: June 24 through July 22. Host families receive a stipend of $200 as an appreciation.
