Working together with others in service to the church and community is one of the best ways to meet people, make friends, and build your sense of spirituality. These groups offer easy ways to get involved. They are suitable for newcomers and for long time members looking for something new.

Volunteer Opportunities for Sunday Services

Altar Decorators

Would you like to provide the Altar Flowers on Sunday to mark a special occasion, to honor someone, or to simply help create beauty in our sanctuary? Your name and the occasion you are marking can be included in the order of service. Contact Leia Durland-Jones or sign up on the bulletin board outside the church office. You can bring the flowers yourself or make arrangements with Leia to have them purchased.

Choir and Music

We encourage those who enjoy singing or who play musical instruments to share their gifts and talents. Choir practice is Thursday night from September to May. There are also opportunities for small musical groups to take part in our services. If you have a musical talent or interest, talk to our Music Director.

Coffee & Snack Servers

Serving on Sunday is the perfect job for the naturally shy. Volunteers offer to serve one Sunday per month at the Social Hour for the 9:15 or the 11:15 service by setting up, serving snacks and coffee, or cleaning up. These are great jobs for newcomers and those who want to meet more UUs.

Greeters

Teams greet and welcome regular attendees at Sunday services as they come in the door and assist new visitors at the visitors’ table. Greeters join a 9:15 or 11:15 team and serve one Sunday every five weeks. This is an excellent volunteer opportunity for those new to the church, providing a chance to meet everyone as they arrive.

Teaching Children and Youth

Our congregation’s religious education program relies on parents and non-parents to help raise the next generation of UUs. Come work in a team with all materials provided where you will have great support from the RE Committee and our staff. We need you!

Ushers

Ushers help to set up and organize the Sanctuary for Sunday morning services, welcome people to church, distribute the order of service, and collect the offertory. Ushers serve once a month, and volunteers are always needed. This is a great way to meet everyone at church.

Food Pantry

On the first Friday of each month from 9:30AM to noon in the Social Hall, volunteers disperse food acquired from the Food Bank to needy families. Volunteers welcome clients and help them sign in, unload food from cases into client bags, and help take their food to their cars.

Soup Kitchen

Church members provide food, staff the kitchen, and serve lunch to the needy every Sunday at the Haven in downtown Charlottesville. Currently, we serve about 50-60 people each Sunday. TJMC-UU has 6 teams, so each team serves once every 6 weeks. Each team has a pool of volunteers to help with preparing the meal and serving.
