Active Minds

A group of friendly faces who meet Thursdays at 1:00 PM in the Church Parlor to discuss a variety of topics pertaining to daily life and the world. Meetings last about an hour and a half with refreshments about halfway through and are open to all.

CareNet

Carenet is a network of volunteers that offers services to church members and supporters during times of need. Anyone within the church community may be called upon to help a neighbor in need. Carenet typically assists with meals, transportation and errands. We can also help with other tasks on a short term basis.

Chalice Lighters

Chalice Lighters is a UUA-wide organization seeking members willing to donate $15 or more three times a year toward spreading UU-ism throughout the US, and particularly through our own TJ District to support fellowships and congregations building their first church or calling their first minister.

Children’s Religious Education (details)
Works with the Director of Religious Education to create the religious education experiences for our two-year-old through fifth-grade students. Focus areas include curricula selection, special events, social action projects, and children’s worship. Supports RE teaching teams.

Communications Committee is responsible for the external and internal communications of the church, including the monthly Bulletin, the Friday email, public service announcements, bulletin boards and social media.  The group manages requests and recommends policy for usage and assesses effectiveness of communication strategies.

Covenant Groups (details)

Denominational Concerns
Educates the congregation about district and continental UU activities. For UUSC, coordinates fundraising events in support of the UUA’s domestic and international social justice ministry.

Emotional Wellness Ministry
Advocacy group of peers, family and providers who will lead our church community to become a welcoming congregation to those who have experienced mental health issues in their lifetime.

Endowment

Environmental Concerns (details)

Food Pantry

Held on the first Friday of the month; distributes food purchased at the Food Bank to those in the community in need.

Fund Raising (details)
Raises money for the church through the following annual events:

  • UUsed Bookstore: An ongoing sale of gently used books each Sunday in the social hour during coffee hour.  An expanded Summer Book Sale happens mid to late summer.
  • Yard Sale Extravaganza (August): Member donations of gentle used items and furniture for sale.
  • Auctions:This annual spring event offers dinners, treasures and services.  Sometime fall event offering dinners and special gift items, often paired with a Chilifest.

Multiple volunteer opportunities available.

Gay Straight Alliance

Greeters

Teams of people rresponsible each week for greeting people as they come in the door for Sunday services and welcomes newcomers at the Visitors’ Table in the Jefferson Foyer. The goal is to make all people feel welcome in our church.

Helps organize 1500-2000 congregants annually to addresses the need for institutional change focused on specific problems and solutions to improve the lives of people in our community who are underserved and marginalized.

Labyrinth Ministry (details)

Walking the labyrinth offers an opportunity for walking meditation, contemplation, and/or prayer.  We are blessed with three labyrinths. Our permanent outdoor Santa Rosa labyrinth is available daily during daylight hours.  Our indoor 11-circuit Chartres-style canvas labyrinth is open for a New Year’s Eve walk and other special occasions.  Our 7-circuit classical concentric ‘versatile’ labyrinth is very portable and is available for groups within the church and in the larger community.  If you are interested in helping with labyrinth walks and labyrinth caretaking, or would like to schedule use of the versatile labyrinth, or would like to find out more about the Labyrinth Ministry, please contact us: labyrinth@uucharlottesville.org

Molly Michie Preschool

This parent-run, cooperative preschool operates in the lower hall of the church five mornings a week. Was founded in 1967 by the church to provide an integrated multicultural preschool experience for church and community families.

NatureSpirit

NatureSpirit welcomed all people who feel nature is a vital part of their spiritual practice. We explored spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.  We are no longer holding an worship service.   We will be holding discussion groups during the church year.  These will be advertised in the TJMC - UU Bulletin and Weekly emails.

Pastoral Visitors

Church members appointed and trained by the minister to serve as pastoral care givers in our congregation. Work with the minister to offer personal spiritual support to members of the church community who are ill at home or in the hospital, or going through a life crisis or transition, or are involved in care-giving. They provide comfort to the bereaved and maintain contact with those unable to attend church. They also sponsor workshops on relevant topics and community resources.
