Faith in Action, redux May 27, 2012

May Theme: Faith. The poet Tagore wrote, “Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.” But what the heck does that mean? We’ll find out this month and, more than that, what to do with it.

One Service only at 10:00 AM

Last week we examined how our congregational organization can be an expression of our faith. This week we’ll look at some of the other ways individuals and groups in our community are actualizing their faith. Bob Kiefer and Erik Wikstrom will be weaving our worship.

Faith in Action May 20, 2012

May Theme: Faith. The poet Tagore wrote, “Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.” But what the heck does that mean? We’ll find out this month and, more than that, what to do with it.

Services at 9:15 and 11:15.

When most people hear the phrase “faith in action” their minds turn to social justice work. Yet there are many ways to put our faith in action, and on this Sunday of our Annual Congregation Meeting we’ll explore how our commitment to, and engagement with, the democratic process is (or, at least, can be!) an expression of our faith. The Congregational Meeting will follow the second service. Thomas Collier and Deborah Rose will be weaving our worship.

Music Sunday May 13, 2012 Ω

Every time a musician opens her mouth to sing, or lifts his instrument, it is an act of faith. Every time a composer puts pen to paper, searching for just the right sound, it is an act of faith. Making music is risky business and yet music, well made, is able to express the inexpressible. Come celebrate the music ministry of TJMC and see such faith made real.

In this service, Rev. Erik Walker Wikstrom’s exploration of music and worship alternated with musical selections by the TJMC-UU choir under the direction of Music Director Scott DeVeaux.  Laws governing performance and intellectual property keep us from posting the music.

On Faith and Belief May 6, 2012 Ω

May Theme: Faith. The poet Tagore wrote, “Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.” But what the heck does that mean? We’ll find out this month and, more than that, what to do with it.

Services at 9:15 and 11:15

These two words “faith” and “belief” are often used interchangeably. Someone might ask “are you a believer?” or “do you have faith?” as if they’re asking the same thing. Yet the roots of these words are planted in slightly different soil, and their importance to our lives – perhaps especially as Unitarian Universalists – can be quite different. How is this meaningful for you? Come and find out! Pam Philips and Erik Wikstrom will be weaving our worship.

I Sing the Body Electric April 29, 2012 Ω

This month we will explore the creation (the universe in which we find ourselves), creation (the act of creation), and creativity (in, around, and through ourselves).

Unitarian Universalism celebrates the sacredness of all of creation – including our own human bodies and the gift of sexuality. “Our Whole Lives” (OWL), a program we use with our youth here at TJMC, is a nationally recognized curriculum (developed by the UUA and the UCC) that teaches a healthy reverence for the body not as the tempting source of sin but as the creative home of blessing. During this service, we will, too.

Listen to Rev. Erik’s exploration of the About Your Sexuality (AYS) and Our Whole Lives (OWL) curricula.
