Members of the Board of Trustees  2003-2004
Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church
Unitarian Univeralist

Lois Brown (vice president for administration)
Lois is the mother of four and grandmother of two. She is a retired special education administrator for Alb. co. schools. She is an active volunteer, including work with Region 10, the senior center, and play partners. She also serves as a guardian for a young woman with special needs. Lois enjoys travel, reading, and bridge.

Ruth Douglas
Ruth is an avid hiker who loves to walk in the temperate deciduous woods such as found in our Blue Ridge Mountains. She is interested in natural history and in fixing things around the house. In her professional life she has been on the faculty and a member of the administration in community colleges, most recently at PVCC. She is now retired.
In addition to serving on the board of the church, she is a member of the finance committee and the stewardship committee and has recently volunteered to co-lead our upcoming canvass.

Sue Drumm
Sue has been a member of TJMC since 1999. She serves on the Special Programs committee, has taught RE, and has worked on bylaws revisions each year since joining the church.
Sue is married and has two kids, Victoria (9) and Miranda (7). She is a lawyer and back into full-time work after staying home with my girls since their births. Sue enjoys singing, cooking, needlepoint, and mystery novels. She is a Girl Scout leader at Baker-Butler Elementary.
Sue and her family live way out in county on Burnley Station Road.

Dan Grogan
Dan has been a member of the church for over 15 years. He is a freelance photographer, travel enthusiast, and a lover of all diversions acquatic. He and his bride, Barbara, are bridging the miles with her work in Washington. Dan's two daughters live out of the area but visit often and all have just returned from a road trip to Lake Superior.

Bonnie Hansen (secretary)
Bonnie has been at TJMC since 1989. She and her spouse, John, are the parents of Ben and Andy, both of whom grew up in this church, and she has taught various RE classes as her sons progressed through the curricula. Hobbies include a book group, an investment club, and a women's circle that grew out of the "Cakes for the Queen of Heaven" ARE class.
Bonnie is employed at Martha Jefferson Hospital as a medical laboratory technologist, with responsibility for MJH's physician office labs. Her favorite things involve immersion in warm water: the Key West pool and the beach will soon be replaced by the hot tub.

Doug Loyd
Doug started coming to our church early in 2002 and immediately felt at home here. He is a former United Methodist minister with a Ph.D. in religion; he grew up in Texas but has also lived and studied in Iowa and in Germany. He has been a pastor of a local church, and a college chaplain; for the nearly twenty years he has worked in the field of computer support, and he currently works at U.Va. as a computer systems senior engineer. At TJMC-UU, he has been co-leader of a covenant group and is currently a member of the worship associates (you might have heard his sermon, "New Kid on the Block," this summer). Doug is engaged to Josie Pipkin (see above) and has three daughters and a grandson.

Diane Ober (vice president for programs)
Diane came to TJMC as DRE in 1985 and has been a member ever since. She's been involved in many different activities in the church, including co-leading a Sunday evening Vespers service for a year, starting a Mom's group when her kids were little, and working with religious education volunteers (as DRE) to present a children/youth play for the church for several years.
Diane is very excited about co-leading with her husband, John Alexander, the Sunday evening high school group this year. Their kids, Guthrie and Addie, a junior and freshman at Charlottesville High School, are also involved with this group.
Diane has an administrative job at U.Va., loves to sing shape note music, and loves living in town in the Woolen Mills area!

Josie Pipkin (president)
Josie has been a member of TJMCUU since the early 80s and has served in various capacities before joining the board last fall. Over the years, she was chair of the publicity committee, member of the RE committee, and teacher of many, many RE classes (including three separate youth groups). She is the mother of three women and the grandmother of six (one boy and five girls). She is engaged to Doug Loyd and when the choice is there she'd rather be gardening than doing just about anything else. In her work life, she is director of communications for the engineering school at U.Va. where she designs and writes promotional and fund raising materials.

Bonnie Sheppard
Bonnie has been a member of our church since 1973. She is the mother of six kids and the grandmother of 8. She loves to garden and to camp/travel, particularly with her husband Bill Spurgin. She is active in SUUSI (our southeast summer gathering in VA) and is retired from the center for electron microscopy at U.Va.
