Services at 9:15 AM & 11:15 AM October 3, Sunday: Association Sunday. The theme of Association Sunday is “Celebrating 50 Years and the Future of Our Faith.” Proceeds from the service will go to ensuring that our religion thrives for generations to come by supporting the “Leap of Faith” growth action plan. Funds will also support the celebration of this significant anniversary. As Rev. Peter Morales, President of the Unitarian Universalist Association says, “We can be the religion for our time. We can only do this together … as an Association.” Please bring your wallets and checkbooks for the special offering. |

Religious Education Religious Education for children nursery through fifth grade is offered at both services. Classes for sixth through twelfth grades are offered at the 11:15 AM service. |

Our service will be led Chaplain Alexandra McGee, Transition Ministry Associate, who will take her theme from the Lectionary for that week. This is the only Sunday morning service that the Christian Fellowship has scheduled for this year; therefore, we hope that we have an especially good turnout for Alex and her service. October 10, Sunday: Peace Action-United Nations, 10:30 AM, Green Room. The agenda will include the results of our congregational peace survey with plans for follow up; the UU UNO Honors program with four criteria to become a Blue Ribbon congregation; and a new ‘Peace Ministry Network’ program sponsored by the UUA Commission on Social Witness. You are invited to participate to help make decisions. Background information about these two new programs will be available for discussion. October 10, Sunday: Environmental Action Photograph, 12:30 PM, Outside. TJMCers are invited to gather on the lawn between the Sanctuary and Summit House to form a human 350 for a group photo. Why? This day (10/10/10), in more than 170 countries worldwide, citizens are holding Global Warming Work Shops to tell their governments there is no time left to begin taking action. NASA’s Center for Climate Analysis chief, Dr. James Hansen, has declared, among others, that the uppermost safe level of carbon dioxide (C02) in earth atmosphere is 350 parts per million. In May 2010, the planetary average was 392 parts/million and rising. (For more info see 350.org on the web, where we expect our photo will appear.) |

Church Notes & Requests for Help Auction donations needed: The Fall ChiliFest and Silent Auction are on Saturday, November 6, and we are especially in need of dinners and other events to take place between then and April 15, 2011. We want to offer a broad range of frugal and fancy, for children, intergenerational, and adults-only. Other great offerings would be services with a winter/spring theme and children’s items to supplement the gift-worthy treasures gleaned from the yard sale. Membership Directory: Due to a few technical glitches, our new Membership Directory disk distribution will be delayed a few weeks. Calling guitarists and singers for a special folk rock musical offering of the Eagles’ song “There’s a Hole in the World Tonight.” This will be shared during our worship services Sunday, October 24. Greeting Cards - Collection for FWCC: The Labyrinth Ministry has begun collecting stationery items (greetings cards of all kinds, writing paper, and especially stamps) for our annual holiday donation to the Fluvanna Women’s Correctional Center. Please help by placing your donations in the FWCC Collection Box located in the Jefferson Foyer under the black table. Deadline is the end of October. UUSC-TJMC Holiday Card: Send a winter holiday greeting card to TJMC friends and members during the end-of-the-year holidays by contributing to the UUSC – no postage needed. Contributions small and large are welcome and contributors’ names will be listed it he card, to be issued with the December 2010 Monthly Bulletin. Membership for adults is $40 ($75/couple); seniors 65 and over $20; students and youth $10, checks payable to UUSC. You may mail your contributions to TJMC, Attn: UUSC, or give it to Edith Good at Sunday coffee hour by December 15, Contact: Edith Good at 293-4044. You can quietly support our worship services by providing altar decorations. Decorations can be simple or elaborate, in honor or memory of someone or a special event or “just because.” How about a bouquet of flowers or a display of objects from a treasured personal collection? Something full of whimsy or… not! Add your name to the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board near the water fountain in the hallway outside the Social Hall. Consider your altar decorations a gift to your fellow worshippers. Thank you! Challenge/Coming of Age Class Marketplace open for business! Help our ninth graders raise the necessary funds for their class pilgrimage in the spring. Bulb orders for spring flowers are being taken. Come purchase an “Attractions” coupon book, 2010-2011 Academic Planning Calendar or a flash drives with chalice logo. All available in the Social Hall today. Come see! RE Wish List: Thank you to all who donated spray paint! Some was used for primer and some is covering our beautifully refurbished Bingo machine. Check it out between services next to the RE table in the Social Hall. Our next wish is to add to the prize baskets for Oktoberfest Bingo games. The prize categories are: Africa, dragons, cats, China and Japan, Shamrocks, Halloween, Christmas, Flowers, things that bounce, wooden toys and things that fly. Got anything to add to the prize baskets? Please leave donations on the RE table near the Edgewood Lane entrance or bring donations to Oktoberfest on Friday, October 1, from 5:30-8 PM. Attention lobster lovers! We have eight $25 Red Lobster GiftCards at the scrip table ISO love. Buy them and you get to chow down on cheese biscuits, and TJMC gets a 9% donation from Red Lobster. With the holidays around the corner, remember that Scrip GiftCards make great gifts. We can order cards for hundreds of national retailers, and with each GiftCard you purchase, you earn money for TJMC. We will keep a sign up sheet at the scrip table through the fall for you to place special orders. Discover for yourself who said those inspiring words and tell Leia Durland-Jones, the Director of Religious Education and you win a prize! Doug Loyd has written to say he has been transferred from the regional jail near Fredericksburg to a “prison system intake facility” east of Richmond prior to being placed in a state prison. He also wrote, “I do appreciate all the thoughts and prayers from the folks at TJMC-UU.” Doug expects his new contact information to be available in the near future. |

Community News October 7, Thursday: “What’s On Your Plate: A Public Forum on Local Food and the Media,” 4 PM. Presented by the UVA Food Collaborative brings together three of today’s pre-eminent food writers and thinkers for an engaging discussion on alternative agriculture and the media forces that are shaping our perceptions of the sustainable food movement. The panel will be moderated by TJMC member Ben Cohen, historian, agrarian studies scholar, and Food Collaborative coordinator. Also, there will be a reception with yummy locally-sourced food afterward.
