Stewardship Campaign News

It has been a wonderful month! With news of Rev. Wikstrom’s candidacy with TJMC-UU, the Stewardship Campaign has gotten a boost of good energy. As of Sunday, March 20, we have received over $320,700 in pledges from 186 pledgers. We are now in our last week, so we need to hear from you. If you have not yet pledged your financial support to the church for next year, please do so by clicking here. We will be hosting an evening soon to put phone calls out to everyone we have not heard from. If you would like to join us, please contact Karen or Dan at stewardship@uucharlottesville.org. Thank you!

9:15 AM + 11:15 AM Services

March 27, Sunday: Sermon - On Reverence and Reverends, 9:15+11:15 AM. Rev. Dr. Janet E. Newman. As TJMC-UU gets closer to candidating week, I want to explore how clergy seek to lead congregations. Our own Ralph Waldo Emerson said it right in The Divinity School Address of 1838. Special and unusual music will be provided by Bill Gardner, Wendy Repass, and the Adult Choir. Corn muffins provided after each service.

Religious Education

Religious Education for children nursery through fifth grade is offered at both services.

Programming for sixth through twelfth grades is offered at the 11:15 AM service only.

Church This Week.

March 25, Friday: Labyrinth Walk, 5:30-8:30 PM, Social Hall. Instead of the theme previously announced, this labyrinth walk will be dedicated to the support of the people of Japan. All donations received will be contributed to Japan earthquake-tsunami relief. The walk will be accompanied by live acoustic music from 7-8:30 PM.

March 27, Sunday: PAUN Info on Africa’s Need for Mosquito Netting, after both services, Social Hall. Andrea Moncada, student at UVA, is a member of the UNICEF Chapter at the University, whose current effort is sending mosquito netting to Africa to prevent malaria. She will be at our Peace Action/UU-UNO table with information and request forms to help support the purchase of mosquito nets. Andrea is a member of our PA/UN group.

March 28, Monday: IMPACT’s Nehemiah Action March, 6:30 PM, University Hall off Massie Road. Please help us reach our goal of 100 attendees by joining us for IMPACT’s most important event of the year. Bring your family, friends, and neighbors. Questions? Call Bob Gross, Trish Foley, Greta Dershimer, or Jean Sorrells-Jones.

Church Notes & Requests for Help

Church Calendar 7/11-6/12: Please be sure you have turned in your committee or groups request for meeting space to the Church Office by the end of March. You can check your dates on our website calendar at uucharlottesville.org. Let the Office know if any adjustments that need to be made.

Grounds News: To new members and as a reminder to old members I made up an Adopt-a-Plot plan for helping to maintain church grounds. See Admin bulletin board for diagram of grounds and sign up sheet. My hope is that we can have the grounds shining for our new ministerial candidate’s arrival. Contact: Sallie Kate Park, Grounds Chair, at windlwindsk@earthlink.net.

If you are a realtor wishing to aide Rev Wikstrom and his family in searching for a place to live in Charlottesville, please email Betty Warner by Wednesday, March 30, at bettywarn@aol.com. Please include a listing of your certifications, honors and licenses, your years of experience selling real estate in Charlottesville, and a paragraph of housing advice you might give this family with two boys, ages 7 and 9.

The UUA has created a Japan Relief Fund to support the recovery efforts of our religious partners there. Rissho Kosei-kai, Tsubaki Grand Shrine, the Konko Church of Izuo, the Tokyo Dojin Church, and the Japan Chapter of the International Association for Religious Freedom are now considering the specific efforts they will be taking to support the work of recovery. Please join with UUs throughout the United States by contributing to the UUA’s Japan Relief Fund.

Easter Memorial Lilies: As in prior years, the UU Christian Fellowship is arranging for the church to be decorated with lilies for Easter Sunday, April 24. The lilies are to be in memory of, or in honor of, a person or persons. The cost per lily will presumably be $12. Donations can be made to Jackie Olshefski or Jean Newland in the Social Hall after the services. If this is not convenient, please call Eleanor May at 295-7624. The names of the givers and those to be memorialized or honored should be specified on the check with the payment made out to “TJMC – Easter Lilies.”

Member Photos on the Bulletin Board: In preparation for candidating week, we are sprucing up the Welcome to TJMC bulletin board in the entrance by the Edgewood Lane door and we would like to use pictures of church members from the recent church directory. The pictures will be small 3”x 2” photos forming a border around the periphery of the bulletin board. No names will be posted. If you have an objection to your photo being used in this way, please contact Susan Bremer at 975-2505 or sdbremer@embarqmail.com by Friday, April 8. If you would especially like your picture to be added to the board in the hallway as a member of the church, please also let her know for only about fifty people will be pictured on this board. They will be chosen in a random manner otherwise.

Chalice Lighters: Help provide funding for UU congregations in our district and you will be a “Chalice Lighter.” The TJ District has sent Call #154 for funds to help the UU Fellowship of Beaufort, SC. As a congregation with a conscience, they sold land back to a Gullah community rather than build their first home. They now have found another site and plan expansion. Closing date for Call #154 is Wednesday, March 30. The UU Congregation of Columbia, SC Call #153 thanks the 1160 Chalice Lighter from the District who sent them $27,000. Thanks to all at TJMC-UU who contributed to their expansion. Updated Chalice Lighter information can be found on the table in the foyer or from Edith Good on Sundays at the cold drinks counter.

Do you receive our Religious Education newsletter with weekly highlights and information about what is happening in our Children and Youth Religious Education program? You do not need to have children in the program to be added to the mailing list. Contact Leia Durland-Jones, DRE, at leiadj@embarqmail.com.

The Children’s RE program is making care packages for US Troop members connected to our congregation and serving in Afghanistan. We are seeking donations of travel-sized baby wipes, laundry soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand sanitizer, sun block, etc. For a complete list of items to donate, see the collection box in the Edgewood Lane hallway or visit the church website at uucharlottesville.org.

Ink cartridges needed! Please bring your used ink cartridges to the office of KaeRenae Mitchell, Director of Music, Monday through Friday from 9 AM–12:30 PM and from 1:30-5 PM. We need to buy folders and supplies for the Adult Choir and this will help us. Thank you.
