Church This Week

August 20, Friday: Yard Sale Set Up, 9 AM4 PM. Your yard sale crew needs some extra help to do the final setup for this year’s yard sale.  Please sign up at the yard sale table on Sunday or write yardsale@uucharlottesville.org.

August 21, Saturday: 11th Annual “TJMC Back-To-School Yard Sale Extravaganza”! 8 AM—2PM. We need volunteer help especially for the early shift, 7:30-10 AM and again for cleanup 2:30–4 PM, but general and furniture sale help and cashiers slots are available throughout the day. If you can help clean up, please come by around 2:45, when we will pack up and transport the leftovers to local charities and tidy up the building for Sunday. Some extra trucks and vans would be very helpful to transport our refugee families’ selections to their homes as well.  Many hands make light work! Thanks for your support!

August 22, Sunday:  Book Sale Closeout. The Summer Book Sale closes today, so make a generous donation to the church and pack up a bag or box of leftover books to take away for your reading enjoyment.

August 22, Sunday: IMPACT, 11:30 AM, Down Stairs Kitchen. IMPACT is starting its fourth year and we need your participation! Get ready for another exciting year with IMPACT, our community -wide interfaith social justice organization. Past successes in the areas of public transportation, affordable housing, dental care, and education have all contributed to creating more equitable services for those in need. We will once again be hosting house meetings and listening sessions beginning late-August and through September. For more information please contact Bob Gross at 977-9828 or Trish Foley at 973-1114.

August 22, Sunday: 2-5 PM, All Church Swim Party at Blue Ridge Swim Club. Open House for TJMC members and friends at the Blue Ridge Swim Club. Come as a guest of the pool and join your friends for a dip and a ride in an inner tube. Bring your little kids to make sand castles in our sand box. Bring some snacks and come ready to swim, play badminton and see your friends. One last summer celebration before school opens. We will bring the watermelon. No charge, rain cancels. See the pool website for directions www.blueridgeswimclub.com. Contact Leia Durland-Jones, DRE, for more information at 293-8179 or leiadj@embarqmail.com.

In our church life and our home life, many of us find that the new year is actually September, armed with new pencils freshly sharpened or the energy of cooling air we feel the anticipation of a fresh start. We will examine that time of productive anticipation when there are new beginnings and new visions.

Church Notes & Requests for Help

Name Tags: Just a reminder to everyone, please wear your name tag as we welcome Rev. Dr. Janet Newman. If you need a replacement nametag, please notify the Church Office at office@uucharlottesville.org.

Grounds News: Many thanks to all who have helped clean up downed trees and limbs over the summer and who have mowed the yards. You have not only saved the church much money but have helped keep the grounds looking good. Your efforts after church a couple of Sunday’s ago in dragging the huge pile to curbside has made it possible to have a cleared space for the Yard Sale. I will be posting the “Adopt a Plot” sign-up sheet in September so that those who signed up a couple of years ago can either re-commit to their particular plot, and/or give others a chance to also sign up. We have extensive grounds that require much effort, especially the Spring and Fall cleanups. For more information contact Sallie Kate Park, Grounds Chair, at grounds@uucharlottesville.org.

Chalice Lighters: Help provide funding for new UU congregations in our district and you will be a Chalice Lighter. The Thomas Jefferson District has sent a call for funds to help Wake Forest PEACE Fellowship provide a permanent, stable site to replace their temporary, se-up-take-down meeting place. Please pick up literature at Edith Good’s cold drinks counter in the Social Hall after the service or phone her at 293-4044. Thanks.

Greeters Needed: Again it is greeter recruiting time, and we are in need. Being a greeter is such an easy job. Your purpose is to welcome all people to church, especially newcomers. All you do is turn up once every five weeks with your team at the service of your choice – early or late. There are no committee meetings during the year. The only time we gather as a group is at the Greeter Brunch (great food provided), this year it will be held on Sunday, September 26, in the Parlor after the second service. Now, truth be told, a little more is required. It is necessary to be friendly. It is necessary to greet people before the service and to stay after the service to be sure that no newcomers are standing alone in the Social Hall. The team is responsible for setting up visitor information on the table in the foyer and returning it to the cubby in the mail room after the second service. That is it. Does this sound like something you would like to do? Please contact Jenny Gaden at 293-6275 or jgaden@embarqmail.com, or Jean Newland at 971-4996 or kipandjean@gmail.com. Thank you!

Do you love children and music? If so, our children’s choirs need you! Due to the reduction in hours this year for the Director of Music, these two choirs need volunteer directors and coordinators. The children are truly delightful and talented to work with! If you are interested in leading these fine young people, please contact KaeRenae Mitchell at293-8179 or krmitchell@embarqmail.com. Hope to hear from you soon!

Are you a good supply organizer? We need a Supply Closet Coordinator for the religious education program due to the reduction this year in RE Assistant’s hours. One to two hours weekly with flexibility of when the work gets done. Contact Leia Durland-Jones at 293-8179 or leiadj@embarqmail.com if you would like to help.

Thank you for your donations of empty prescription containers for our volcano project in the summer child care co-op. The activity was a success and no more containers are needed. We appreciate your support!

RE Wish List: Krylon, Rustoleum or other enamel-based paint (not latex or water based) for our new Bingo Machine (new to us - needs refurbishing, that is why the paint). All colors/all types. Containers should be at least half full. Please leave in box near Edgewood Lane entrance. All unused supplies will be donated to Habitat for Humanity. Please note: This wish expires Monday, September 20, so please bring in donations before then!

Community News

Help TJMC Win $1,000: It is not often that you have a simple, fast way to (1) have a chance to win $10,000 in home improvements (2) contribute to a sustainable community and (3) help TJMC win $1,000. From now until August 20, you can go green and help us win green! The Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) is running the Charlottesville Home Energy Makeover Contest where two local homeowners will win up to $10,000 each in home energy and water efficiency improvements. To help spread the word about this exciting contest, LEAP teamed up with the Center for Non-Profit Excellence to give local charities like [NON-PROFIT NAME] the opportunity to win $1,000 – three charities with the most contest entries (based on small, medium and large budget categories) each win the cash prize. Please take five minutes today to go to www.cvillesaves.org and register for the Home Energy Makeover Contest. Be sure to enter “TJMC” in the “Non-Profit Challenge Organization” box on the form. Forward this email to friends and family and help TJMC win $1,000 to support our important work. Act fast as the contest closes August 20. Contest open to residential property owners in Charlottesville and Albemarle. See the contest website for rules.

AIM Needs Help: I am sorry to report that although we have money to buy air conditioners for elderly folks and others who are in dire need, we no longer have a source of air conditioners to buy. Lowes has run out of them and will not be getting any more in. Likewise, for Walmart and KMart. We continue to get calls requesting them. If any of your congregation members have a small window unit that they no longer need, please contact me so we can try to arrange help for people during this intense heat. Thanks! Drene at AIM@ntelos.net.

Friday Email Submission Deadline: Thursday noon the day before the Friday.
