Go Tell It on the Mountain

mtr-14

The Green Sanctuary Committee intends to launch an eco-justice project to inform and unite the faith communities in Virginia  about mountaintop removal mining (MTR) to advocate to end it.  We are one of six national religious organizations to officially condemn the practice.  To learn more about our UU 2003 Action of Immediate Witness, “End Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining,”  click here.

Our Interfaith Vigil for the Mountains and People of Appalachia, “500 Mountains Destroyed — How Many More?” was the first step in our eco-justice project, an attempt to build a group of volunteers at our church and in other congregations to work with us.  Members from The Church of the Incarnation (Roman Catholic), The Charlottesville Friends’ Meeting (Quakers), the Gesher Center for Jewish Spirituality, Meditation, and Healing, and St. Paul’s Memorial Church (Episcopalian) gave readings from their faiths’ teachings on earth stewardship.  We hope that they and other faith communities will join us and carry the message about the horror that is mountaintop removal.
