February 5, 2017: Gauguin’s Three Questions

Read the Order of Service.

These three questions were inscribed by the artist Paul Gauguin on a painting in 1897, and they form the basis of one of our hymns.  (Where do we come from?  What are we?  Where are we going?)  They also suggest an intellectual approach to forming identity — our identity (individual or collective) comes from our ability to answer these questions.  And there is merit in that — our identity IS related to where we came from, where we are right now, and where we’re going.  How would you answer these questions – for yourself, for our congregation, for our movement, maybe even for our nation and world?  [Note:  this is a Story Sunday, and the TJMC Adult Choir will be singing.]
